Does music help you study?

The verdict

The overall effect of background music across every outcome averages out to nothing, because the specific effects run in opposite directions and cancel. Music reliably disturbs reading and has small negative effects on memory, while improving mood and sports performance. Lyrics in a language you understand cause the damage, and habitual listeners suffer far less than people unused to it.

What is the overall verdict?

There is no overall verdict, and that is the most useful thing to know. Kämpfe, Sedlmeier and Renkewitz found a global null effect for background music on adult listeners, and their reading of it is that specific effects in opposite directions averaged each other out.

Broken apart, the pattern is clear. Music disturbs the reading process. It has small detrimental effects on memory. It improves emotional reactions, and it improves achievement in sport.

So asking whether music helps you study is the wrong shape of question. It depends entirely on what studying means in your case, and reading is the activity it damages most.

How large is the damage to reading?

In one study, very large. Sun and colleagues tested 90 Chinese students on reading comprehension in three conditions: silence, Mandarin pop music, and English pop music. All the texts were in Chinese.

Students who did not normally study with music scored 0.900 accuracy in silence. With Mandarin lyrics playing, the same group scored 0.300. That is a collapse rather than a decline.

Habitual listeners were hit too, falling from 0.900 to 0.740, though far less severely. Both groups did better with English lyrics, where the words carried no meaning they could follow.

Why do lyrics do this specifically?

Because reading and listening to speech compete for the same machinery. When participants were asked, they described being unable to read the words because they were attending to the lyrics.

The language test in that study makes the point cleanly. Mandarin lyrics against a Chinese text produced the worst scores. English lyrics against the same text produced much better ones, for students whose English was weaker.

Meaning is the active ingredient. A voice you can understand pulls language processing away from the page, and a voice you cannot understand is closer to noise.

What about instrumental music?

This study did not test it, and the authors list that omission as a limitation. So the common recommendation to use instrumental music is a reasonable inference from the lyrics finding rather than something directly demonstrated here.

The wider meta-analysis still found reading disturbed generally, so instrumental music is unlikely to be free. It also found tempo influenced the pace of whatever activity was being performed, which is worth knowing if you are working to something fast.

What is worth doing?

Cut lyrics for anything involving reading or language. That is the one finding here with a large, replicated effect behind it.

Keep your habit if you have one. Habitual listeners lost a fraction of what non-listeners lost, so switching to silence for one exam is unlikely to be the upgrade it sounds like.

Match the sound to the task. Music helped mood and physical performance in the same body of work that showed it hurting reading, so the useful question is what you are about to do rather than whether music is good.

Is instrumental music safe?
