Does brown noise help you focus?

The verdict
Moderate background noise improves sustained attention for some people and measurably impairs working memory for others, so the honest answer depends on the task and on the person. Almost all of this research tested white noise. Brown noise itself has barely been studied, and no trial supports the idea that one colour of noise is better than another.

What is brown noise?
Brown noise is a steady rushing sound weighted toward low frequencies, which makes it deeper and softer than white noise. White noise spreads energy evenly across frequencies and sounds harsher, closer to radio static. Pink noise sits between the two. All three are broadband sound with no melody or words.
The colours describe how the energy is distributed across the frequency range. Nothing else about them differs, and no property of brown noise gives it a special claim on attention.
Worth knowing before you read any further: the research is about white noise. Brown noise specifically has been scarcely investigated, so every finding below comes from studies of white noise, and applying them to brown noise is an assumption rather than a result.
Does background noise improve focus?
For some tasks and some people, yes. In a 2022 study in Scientific Reports, 39 adults worked under ambient office noise, 45 dB white noise, and 65 dB white noise. At 45 dB, sustained attention rose to 95.2 per cent from 93.1, creativity scores rose to 65.1 per cent from 50.8, and physiological stress fell.
Awada and colleagues ran each person through all three conditions in randomised order, which makes the comparison reasonably clean. The 45 dB level is roughly a quiet room with a fan, well below conversation.
Volume mattered a great deal. At 65 dB, typing was slower and less accurate than at 45 dB, and stress measured through skin conductance rose. Working memory was the one measure that did better at 65 dB, and it came with that stress cost.
The sample was 39 graduate students of similar age, and the authors say plainly that they could not examine effects by age or gender, and tested only two noise levels.
Can noise make your thinking worse?
Yes, and this is the part usually left out. Across five experiments with 167 people, white noise impaired accuracy on working memory tasks compared with silence. The authors concluded that white noise has no general effect on cognition, and instead produces different effects depending on the task.
Herweg and Bunzeck published this in Frontiers in Psychology in 2015. Noise sped up perceptual judgements, gave a marginal benefit on an attention task, and made people less accurate when they were holding information in mind.
That split is the practical finding. Sound appears to help when you are sustaining attention on something in front of you, and to interfere when you are holding several things in your head at once. Reading and grinding through a familiar task sit in the first group. Mental arithmetic, planning, and writing something structured sit closer to the second.
Does it depend on who you are?
Strongly. A 2024 study of 43 children with ADHD found no overall effect of white noise, and two opposite effects underneath that average. Children scoring higher on inattention performed better with noise. Children with mainly hyperactive and impulsive traits performed worse with it.
Söderlund and colleagues reported this in the Scandinavian Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology. The same pattern held whether the noise was auditory or visual, which points to something about the person rather than the sound.
This explains why the advice you hear is so contradictory. In any group, some people are helped and some are hindered, and the average across them lands near zero. Your own experience is better evidence for you than the average is.
The study is small at 43 children, three quarters of them boys, across a wide age range, and the authors flag all of that.
What should you actually do?
Try it, keep it quiet, and judge it by your work. Around 45 dB is the level with the best evidence, quiet enough that you could hold a conversation over it. Use it for sustained tasks, and try silence when you need to hold several things in mind at once.
Colour is the least important variable. Choose whichever you find least irritating, because tolerability over an hour matters more than any measured difference between them.
Give it a fair test. Run a week of ordinary work with sound and a week without, and compare how much you got through. If the honest answer is that it made no difference, that is worth knowing before you pay for an app.
Questions people ask
- Is brown noise better than white noise for focus?
- No study supports that. Brown noise has barely been tested, and the comparisons that exist do not show one colour outperforming another. Pick the one you can tolerate for an hour.
- How loud should it be?
- Quiet. The clearest benefits appeared at 45 dB, and 65 dB brought slower typing, more errors and higher measured stress.
- Why does it help some people and not others?
- Baseline arousal appears to matter. People with higher inattention tend to benefit, and people with more hyperactive and impulsive traits can perform worse. The averages hide both.
- Can I use it while writing or doing maths?
- Those lean on working memory, which is where noise impaired accuracy. Silence is the better first choice for that kind of work.
