Do learning styles exist?

The verdict
You do have a preferred way of taking information in. The claim that matching teaching to that preference improves learning fails when tested. A 2024 meta-analysis found a small effect that its own authors call too small and too infrequent to act on, and only a quarter of measures showed the pattern the theory requires. Matching how you study to the material beats matching it to your preference.

What do people mean by a learning style?
The usual version says each person is a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner, and learns best when taught in that mode. Researchers call the testable part of this the meshing hypothesis: that matching instruction to preference improves learning. Preferences are real and easy to measure. Whether meshing works is the question.
Proving it needs a specific result, called a crossover interaction. Visual learners have to do better with visual teaching, and auditory learners have to do better with auditory teaching, in the same study. If everyone simply learns more from one mode, that says something about the mode and nothing about styles.
That distinction is why the field looks contradictory. Studies find effects all the time. Very few find the crossover.
Does matching instruction to your style help?
Barely, and less than its advocates need. A 2024 meta-analysis of 21 studies, 101 effect sizes and 1,712 participants found a small statistically reliable benefit at g = 0.32. Only 26 per cent of learning measures showed the crossover interaction the theory requires. The authors conclude the benefit is too small and too infrequent to warrant adoption.
Clinton-Lisell and Litzinger published this in Frontiers in Psychology, and it is the fairest treatment of the question available, because it takes the hypothesis seriously enough to test it properly instead of dismissing it.
Their limitations matter as much as the number. Eighty-five per cent of studies excluded people whose style scores were ambiguous, which loads the dice toward finding an effect. Most studies failed the quality standards. Heterogeneity was very high at 91 per cent, meaning the studies disagree with each other far more than chance explains. Every study was a single session, so nothing here speaks to learning across a term.
Their recommendation is multimodal teaching for everyone, on both cost and outcomes.
What happens when you test it directly?
It comes apart. In a 2020 study of 125 fifth-graders, children were assessed for learning style then taught by listening and by reading. Visual learners did better at both listening and reading comprehension. There was no relationship between auditory style and listening, or between visual style and reading.
Rogowsky, Calhoun and Tallal ran this in Frontiers in Psychology. The result is the opposite of meshing: one group did better across the board, which points to general ability rather than a style that needs matching.
The authors note the study ran in a single rural school and used text-based comprehension questions, which may have favoured visual learners. It is one study, and it lands exactly where the meta-analysis lands.
Why does the idea survive?
Because the preference is genuine, and preference feels like aptitude. Something that feels easier feels like it is working. Learning research keeps finding the opposite: the methods that feel harder in the moment tend to produce better retention.
The idea is also generous. It tells you there is nothing wrong with how you learn, only with how you were taught. That is a kind message and it is a poor guide to how to study.
What should you do instead?
Match the method to the material and to what you will have to do with it. Learning a route needs a map, learning pronunciation needs listening, learning a physical skill needs doing. That is matching the mode to the task, and it works for everyone.
Then use the methods with strong evidence behind them regardless of preference: testing yourself instead of rereading, spacing your practice out over time, and mixing related topics together. These reliably feel worse and work better.
Take information in more than one way when you can. Reading it and hearing it and drawing it beats any single channel, and it beats choosing a channel based on a questionnaire.

- You may genuinely find video easier and more engaging, which matters for whether you keep going. Ease during learning is a poor predictor of what you will remember later.

- What actually improves learning?
- Testing yourself, spacing practice over time, and mixing topics. All three feel harder than rereading and all three outperform it.
